Description

Hesston Sketch Plan, Plate III, dated August 1963.
In 1962, the City of Hesston had contracted Oblinger & Smith - Planning Consultants to formulate a general development plan for Hesston. Of note, the plan, which was completed in 1964, proposed building 2 additional Elementary Schools. Since this map includes the sites for those proposed schools, it seems likely that it was created for the consultants or perhaps as part of ongoing discussions the city was having with the consultants during those 2 years. The proposed new Elementary Schools were never built. The "High School Site", whose building was constructed the following year in 1964, originally housed 7th-12th grades. A few years later in 1970, that building became the Middle School, housing 5th-8th grades, and a new High School building was constructed for 9th-12th grades.
