Text

On the evening of March 13th when the tornado warning sounded, the staff, here at Schowalter Villa guided those of us who are residents in the nursing wing into the hall. I am 90 years old and use a walker. Someone gave me a chair at the corner where the 200. 300 and 400 halls meet. Our administrator, Leo Schmidt, and chaplain. Wesley Jantz. were moving about to see that all were being attended to Chaplain Jantz was standing across the hall from me.
I found myself praying silently, then singing, "The winds and the waves shall obey they will. Peace be still! Peace, peace be still !"
I shall never forget the expression on the face of our Chaplain in the dimly lighted hall (our electric lights were out).
After the "all clear” was given we were helped to our rooms by aids who had flashlights
Within an hour our daughter, Karen Unruh. whose family lives in the Farmington Addition, came to inform us that she and her family were okay, but had seen lots of damage.
About 10:00 p.m., we had lights. Some after effects were breakfast and dinner on plastic dishes, a shower and shampoo in cold and small amounts of water. We gradually became aware of the severity of the storm.
