Description
Gathered from information on reverse: Photograph of Abraham Lincoln Hess family taken 1918. Standing L to R: Claude, Jenie, Abe, Elmer, Grace, Ira. Front L to R: Allen, Anna, Helne, Vera, Abram L., Mary.
An additional memo seems to be instructions for a commissioned painting based on this, of Portrait of Man Sitting on Chair: "Hair: Black with Gray. Eyes: Gray. Eyebrows: Heavy and Dark. Suit: Medium to Dark Gray. Shirt: White with no tie. Chair: Walnut. Make approximate proportions to what has been drawn on photo, but use your best judgment. Paint the back of chair somewhat lower, to about the lower part of his ear. Also lower chair arms so his arms are lowered just a little. Bring in the arm of the chair to his right so that it looks proper. Chair is too wide and high for this man. However, make sure that he does not looked [sic] cramped in the chair. Paint both hands, but not too prominently, so that they will not detract from his face. Close his coat and darken top of legs so that trousers will not be too prominent."
