Description

"The Fire @ Hesston" -handwritten on back of photograph

According to Murray Bandy ("Hesston Centennial 1886-1896"), the presence of Swartz Bros Cash Grocery dates the image at 1922-23 (p. 34) or 1920-24 (p. 65). It seems likely that this is the fire described on p. 69., dating it April 15, 1921. That fire started in the Howard restaurant, destroying four buildings entirely (the drug store, barber shop, Rapp house, and the restaurant) and damaging many others.
