Collection: Mill and Grain Elevator
Title
First Hesston Grain Elevator
Subject
business, grain elevator
Description
First Hesston Grain Elevator built by William F. Rapp in 1890. Commonly called Baer Grain Elevator because Mr. Baer was manager for many years and thought by some to have been the builder. Baer never owned this elevator. -- back of photograph
"In September, 1890, Rapp employed "Hubbard and Watson" to build Hesston's first grain elevator on railroad property north of the tracks and west of Shaver (Main) Street. Rapp soon acquired adjoining lots to the north. In 1903, he sold the elevator to Whitewater Flour Mills and Jacob S. Baer became manager. Baer constructed coal bins west of the elevator and began selling coal. He purchased a tank truck and sold gas and kerosene. He was the first businessman to sell and deliver fuel from Hesston. He employed Abraham N. Troyer as salesman and truck driver. In approximately 1945, Whitewater Mills sold the elevator to Roy S. Troyer doing business as Hesston Mill and Elevator. Troyer sold the property to Dale and Lucille Hochstetler who sold it to James Hamilton, Alan Schrag, and Richard Wenger doing business as Sunglo Feeds, Inc. (24, Bandy).
