lumber yard, business
Description
First Hesston, Ks lumber yard. Started by Christian Wenger and Henry (Harry) Grabill. Later sold to William Rapp, who started the Hesston State Bank and housed the bank in one room of this building. 10 -- handwritten on back of photograph
In March 1889, Christian Wenger and Henry "Harry" Grabill established the Hesston Lumber Company. Grabill served as manager. On February 16, 1895, Grabill sold his one-half interest in the lumber yard to Wenger who owned the other half. Wenger sold the yard to William F. Rapp. Rapp owned the yard (it is thought Grabill was manager) until 1907 when he sold it to A.G. Bolz who in turn sold it to E.G. Bolz. The yard was later sold to Welsey Vogt who sold it to Ivan S. Kropf. Kropf employed Robert Diller as manager. By Diller's astute management skills, the yard expanded to its present size (24, Bandy).
