Description

Photograph of Hesston dated 1916.

Caption in Murray Bandy's Hesston Centennial, page 63, published in 1986: "A view looking northeast from Green Gables. At extreme right is 216 S. Main, home of Paul Burckhart. Second home on left is 221 S. Main, M.M. Vogt residence. Steeples in distance are at left Evangelical Church and the other is the old Methodist Church, photo date, 1914."

The back of the second copy reads, "Post card dated: November 22, 1915. To: Fannie Kanagy From: J.B. Kanagy.
Dear Mother this is Monday morning, November 22, 1915. At Hesston, Kansas. I am well and the school work is going good. This picture shows Hesston taken from the academy building roof. The second house to the right hand side of the street looking to the left up the street is the house in which Howard and I live. Two gables that you see have an arch in them. The picture is taken looking north east. Your son," -courtesy of the Hesston College Alumni Office.

Another relevant passage on page 63 reads, "A photo of Hesston five years after the school was established shows the Academy and Bible School's effect on the town. When a town is in its embryo state, people build inexpensive housing in case the town fails to flourish. By 1915, townspeople were building permanent commercial buildings and more expensive homes."
